I am going to join in the Feb newbie thread but just need a quick hand if you don't mind
I have planted the following in 3" pots today but not sure I have done it correctly -
cherry toms
lettuce
carrots
sweetcorn
Apart from the sweetcorn which said to only plant two seeds per pot, I have sprinkled my seeds quite generously on my soil. Should I have been a bit more reserved and maybe only planted half a dozen seeds per pot?
Also, it says to thin out to one seedling when they are strong enough. Will it be ok to put these into grow bags at this point? I am concerned that it says to space them at up to 18" intervals for some.
Thanks in advance for any help

For tomatoes, yes. You get one plant per seed and one plant produces a fair amount of tomatoes. As you've already sprinkled them, wait until they germinate and then p r i c k them out later. Depending on the size of the plant when you get to them, you can decide whether to plant them out in their final positions or pot them into a larger pot.
Carrots should be sown direct as they have a long tap root and they don't like being disturbed.
It's a bit early for sweetcorn.0 -
Thanks for your help

I was just going by the packet for sowing times and pot instructions. Must have read it wrong for the time to sow...oops! Definitely said to start the carrots off in a pot though so that is strange.:A

i planted my sweetcorn at the weekend as well
and tomatoes (chillies, peppers etc) all indoors though for the time being
i plant 1 seed per pot
crowd them and they will strangle each other and there wont be enough nutrients to grow them
its easy to think i'll sprinkle a few and hope one or 2 grows, but its doesnt work like that
i echo what above has said about the carrots, and i dont bother planting lettuce indoors
it grows so quickly there isnt much point0 -
Do you reckon it would be worth starting from scratch then? I have a pot outside that I was going to put the carrots in because it is quite deep so that's that sorted but would the grow bag be ok for the lettuce?:A

lettuce will be fine in a grow bag
just wait a few more weeks (depending n where you are in the country)
cut a hole in the GB and lightly sprinkle seeds, cover with soil and water
lettuce grow quickly, and almost anywhere
i plant some in beds, but i have 4 large window boxes, either side of my kitchen door
3 are herbs, and one salad leaves, easy to pick a small amount for a side salad
did you see Jamie Oliver when he was gardening?
he just takes a handfull of seeds and throws them against the walls of his raised beds
grew a treat
i tried, it worked
