Household cleaners and tax implications :-(

Hi,
I was after a bit of advice as I am struggling with the HMRC website.
I am looking to employ a new cleaner and when looking through lots of websites on this matter they refer to PAYE and NI contributions. If I employ a cleaner, 2 hrs a week for a certain amount per hour, paid directly to them without any agency involvement, are they classed as self employed (and therefore sort out their own tax etc) or employed (meaning I have to do PAYE, NI, sick pay etc?)
Thank you for any advice
Shelley

Why go to such lengths? Just pay them whatever sum you agree and don't worry about the NI etc.
They will normally be self employed. If you did go down the employed route, 2 hours a week would put them below both the NI and Income Tax Thresholds so they don't pay either and you don't need to pay employers NI contributions. If yoiu do go down the employed route you would need employers liabilty insurance which will cost you £200 + each year.
Seems a lot of grief to get your ironing done.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
