                    hi - would really appreciate help. my brother is a technophobe and lives in cornwall and i'm in birmingham. can i remote into his machine to solve the problems he has with his computer?

            Yes, Windows has built in 'remote assistance', or else you can use something like TightVNC

            +1 for Crossloop.
Seems to be the easiest for non-techies, with a nice simple layout, and easy connection procedure.
But don't bother setting up an account/registering.

            Does tightVNC allow file transfers between client and host? I'm using logmein at the moment from work PC to home, but would like the ability to send files (without paying of course

            teamviewer does, plain vnc variants require you to open up ports on routers/firewalls, and are unencrypted without extra plugins!!
