Bank Account Security?

Hi
Can someone advise me on whether or not to give my bank account details over the phone?
I received a phone call from a Charity asking me to subscribe/donate a monthly payment to a Cancer charity.
I expressed my concern about giving my account details over the phone to a stranger and asked if they would send me a direct debit form to my home, he had already taken my home address etc. The guy was very polite, said that I'd participated in a telephone survey a few weeks ago which I did and he was phoning in response to the survey.
In answer to me asking for a direct debit form to be posted to my home he said that as he wasn't asking me for my debit card number or security code on the back of the card then it was safe to agree to my account being debited as he wanted the sort code, account number and account name.
Normally I wouldn't agree to this but as it was a Cancer Charity and having lost my Father and best friend to Cancer I agreed however when going from downstairs in the house to upstairs to find my account number I lost the call while using my cordless phone. I took a note of the number using 1471, number is,(02920381900) and googled it, a site says its a marketing agency.

I am willing to donate but worried about giving my details out in this way, any information or advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Jeff

they might be doing marketing for the charity....either way, asking them to send a direct debit form isn't an unreasonable request in my opinion

If they want your money, they shouldn't be so fussy about how you give it.

I'm sure if you contact the charity direct, they will accept a donation in another form. I would suggest that if the marketing agency call back, you tell them that's what you'll be doing.

I think it's safe if it's a reputable company but one could always have doubts about the person on the end of the phone and if they're scribbling something on a scrap piece of paper to take home...

If you have doubts about the people behind the phone you could always go directly to the charity's website and donate through there. Their pages should have a secure payment facility (check for the padlock on your browser).

    Thanks guys for your input.
I have no doubt that the people who phoned will call back soon and now having time to think about it and listening to your advice the safest route to go down is to ask for the registered name of the charity and set up a direct debit myself and that way they aren't losing out by me being afraid to disclose my details and at the same time I have peace of mind.
    Thanks
