Has anyone ever rented furniture?

I am looking for a short term let at the moment until I have found a house to buy but 99% of the properties in the area I need to be in are unfurnished.

I was wondering if anyone has ever rented furniture in this situation? I have no idea how much it costs or if it is any good or not or if you just get stuff that falls to pieces.

I really want to avoid buying furniture as it might not fit into my next house so that will be such a waste of money.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

I've never rented furniture, but I bet it's not worth the cost.

If it were me I'd be looking at inflatable and foldable furniture that was easy to pick up, easy to get back and positioned, then easy to take away again myself.

So inflatable sofas, folding tables etc. I'd see it as "like camping, but indoors".

I'd get some secondhand stuff off e-bay or local secondhand stores. It will end up costing less than hiring it. And, in all likelihood, be more comfy, being designed for use not display - most hired stuff is aimed at LLs or showhomes. Also, drawing on your legal knowledge (lack of? your sig is unclear about how well you are doing, LOL) if you don't own it, what happens when you have a leeetle accident with a glass of red wine/curry with lots of turmeric/a visiting child who discovers your nail scissors .... If you own it, however humble it is, at least you can relax.

furniture is almost a disposable item these days, i'd buy it new (ikea or argos if you dont want to spend much) or visit local charity shops who will probably deliver too.

cant believe no one has suggested freecycle, then move it along down the chain when you're done with it

also, what sort of hosue are you looking to buy? if its more than one bed, you may want spare beds for guests to stay etc, why not just get the mattress for now and then sleep with that on the floor, a mattress will always be used

your packed boxes will make good side tables

cutlery and crockery you probably already have

you can buy a fabric or linen wardrobe and just have a few clothes out

it also depends what you mean by short term? house buying can take ages depending on the situation, you might not want someone elses furniture for all that time

Thanks you guys. I think i am going to go down the freecycle/charity shop route, sounds like a much better plan.

Kunekune - it is going well (so far, touch wood) and i'd already looked into this, some companies do it with accidental insurance. I have lots of accidents with red wine so needed to take the precaution. I just couldnt get a price off these companies so didnt know how much it was but all you lovely moneysavers have probably saved me a wedge. :)

I've rented furniture when living abroad (white goods - I was there for a limited time & didn't want the hassle of getting rid when I moved back to UK).

Unless you're renting the furniture to make a show-home, I don't think it's worth it. The car boot season is nearly on us. Take a mate with an estate car and see what you can find.

As others have said, freecycle/freegle is excellent plus charity shops
