I don't have a driver's licence, or a passport and aren't on benefits no banks want me as I can't supply the narrow range of documents and they have no discretion.

I work in a bank and the reason we have no discretion is to stop money laundering and fraud

If your first statement is true, then your second statement is not. To work for a bank you must go through major checks (ie. CRA and CRB checks). And if the bank you (allegedly) work for won't even let you have an account, then I would appreciate it if you could let me know which bank employs you, so I can make sure I (and nobody else) banks there in the future.

Please forgive me if I have read (and understood) your post wrong.

They quoted my earlier post about applying for a bank account which is the point of this thread. but without including the quote marks. No wonder it's confusing. Typical bankspeak.

    Hi folks

Just to say this thread has been sent to the government policymakers who will be looking at the need for legislation.

I suppose that might make sense if you believe what you have been told that there is a need for legislation (as such), and that the banks can't just be told to comply with the current rules ... ;)

I'm sure these government policy makers will give the thread very great study in the week or two they have before the election is called.

 Does cynicism increase with age? :D

Why are there no worries about going overdrawn? You can still be overdrawn and receive penalty charges on a Cashminder account. Unless you don't use standing orders or direct debits or your debit card at a shop that takes three weeks to process your payment you have all the same risks (and penalties) as a standard current account. The only difference is that you do not have an approved overdraft with cheap costs (when under the approved limit) - if you are prone to idiocy then a Cashminder account will be more expensive, not less expensive, than a standard current account.

thanks Wrangler for your comment I think the painters are definitely in! LOL -

in reply to you KimYeovil yes I think that quite a lot of people are looking on this website for help because they have been prone to a bit of idiocy (obviously by your statement you have never - well done!) - but why not just give helpful advise instead of being a grump :D

I have been told i am able to obtain a basic bank account-i have bad credit due to getting a loan when i was younger and unable to pay back. I got in touch with the credit consumer councilling service who said close account and get another. Idecided to go with the Nationwide building society as i had an Isa and my childrens under 16 account was with them. They were really good did all the changing of dd etc for me. Recently I had a letter saying they are changing the cash cards to cash plus cards which in effect works similar to a direct debit card (i am able to make dd and standing orders with cash card) this new card, being sent out June-Sept 2010 will allow purchases to be made in shops and online - some drawbacks on using abroad etc. I have now decided not to bother with bank account for the foresseable future.

Also I have obtained a cashplus prepaid mastercard. it works like a normal credit card ie purchases but you top it up previously just like a payg phone..You can then only spend what is on there. Even get wages paid into it-tho this may take extra 5days from date paid. You also can use their credit builder asi have for 12 mths. on 14th month you can reapply and pay £5 a month of a loan (which you dont get to spend) and this helps improve your credit history..This is excellent for people that have bad credit rating, havetrouble obtaining credit ie catalogues or even for childrens pocket money- no one is refused.

I can not leave a proper link but look for 'mycashplus.co.uk'

What sort of person asks such stupid questions?
    .
    who quoted KimYeovil

I had a 3mth visitor passport when i was a child before they were stopped. i have never needed one since except fact i cant afford to go abroad i dont see need in having one. If you have a birth certificate you are able to obtain driving licence and certain legal IDs through the gvmt.
  • I was rejected for various accounts I applied for online, such as Cahoot, and wasn't even allowed a savings account. My SIA License which is government issued and which can be used (and has been used by me) as a passport within the EU wasn't good enough ID despite it being more rigorous to obtain than a passport; I do not have a passport or drivers' license and my benefits letter was also declined as ID. I do have a good current account which I opened before my credit rating went to pot, but am not so happy with my bank's customer service which was why I tried to change.

Yes, people are looking for helpful advice so they shouldn't be reading silly statements like the one you typed in all-caps. And where have I ever suggested I have never been idiotic?

If [STRIKE]you[/STRIKE]one was prone to charges when one had an account with an approved overdraft then one will be prone to even higher charges when one has an account without an overdraft. What on Earth is unhelpful or fumes-induced about that warning? What is it you are disagreeing with?
