Radio reception being affected by plugging in DVD players

To keep the kids happy/quiet on long journeys we got them 2 in-car DVD players which are great and wouldnt be without them. But all though this entertains the kids it affects the radio reception for the front passengers, such that we cannot listen to it. If you turn off the DVD players the radio reception returns. Very peculiar!

Car - Focus 56 diesel
Radio - 6000CD
DVD players connected to power socket below radio.

I dont know whether this is a problem with the radio connections, such as poor earthing (MW has does seem rather poor, FM OK), or a typical problem when using DVD players. Perhaps I need to add some suppressors somewhere?

  • Its the voltage regulator in the power adaptor plug causing the interference. Cheap nasty electronics.

Thanks, is there a simple solution to solve it?
  • I'd suggest going to a decent local car audio specialist (not Halfords), and asking them about suppression techniques.

For once (only joking!) PPL is right. A simple suppressor will knock all of that out. Some of them go in-line between the cigar lighter and the accessory charger. Can I ask, withoutr wanting to seem rude, was it one of the cheaper brands? If so they are well know for this issue. I have 2 DVD players for in car use (as we have 2 cars....) one is an Argos own brand (Yamatakawashi?) and the other is a Philips, the cheap generec has this problem whereas the Philips does not. We solved this by putting the cheap one in the Laguna Estate (DCi) which has 3 12V sockets and putting the charger in one of the rear ones as opposed to the 'main' dash one. Simples!

The DVD players are Polaroid PDU-1063. I will try a local audio specialist later this week. Thanks.
