Debt-free and Proud!
We are moving on 12th april into a new build and yesterday i contacted the elec/gas company and explained what was going to be happening. He explained to read metres at both properties etc and i have arranged for the elec/gas to be stopped where i am now on the 12th, and have given new address details.

The gentleman on the phone was really nice gave me his ext no` and said i`m to ring on the day i move in and give him the metre serial no plus another number rmp or something so gas/elec can be put on.
No guarentee that it will happen though especially the gas:eek:
Now problem being we are actually getting keys, and moving in on the 12th with 2 small kiddies and the house is bound to be very cold - extra blankets at the ready!

I cant get in to the house before the 12th which is the issue here, the man was saying if i could get the metre serial no`s beforehand then i would have gas/elec on the actual move day.

I also have no idea where or what im looking for :o i`m guessing the no`s will be on the actual metre and hopefully have metre serial number written next to the it?? lol!
How long does it take for gas/elec to be connected?
Oh my this is stressful.

I'm not sure what the person you spoke to is talking about. I would think that the gas and electric at the new property will already be connected as the builders will have needed them working. Are you sure he wasn't just talking about setting up the accounts?

No the accounts are done i pay by direct debit so it will just be address change.

He was saying i have to give him the serial numbers and another number that i`ll find on the metre itself before he can do anything. He was also adament that he really needed the numbers prior to us moving in to ensure it is all switched on.
I explaqined we cant go in until 12th and he then said call me back the day you move and he gave me his extension number so i can speak to him directly. His words were elec may be ok but gas may not beable to be connected.

I just hope its warmer mid april lol!

It's not just an address change, you will need to set up new accounts at the new address. To do that they will need the meter numbers and the opening readings.
The services will already be on, assuming they have been physically connected.
You don't want the services 'stopped' at the outgoing address, you just need to give your existing utility co. the final readings on the day you go.

The gas and electric should already be running, the builders need some when they are finishing off the property and will have an account set up with a company already. I've just moved into a new build and all I had to do is take meter readings to ensure I wasn't being charged for previous use (not exactly much but you never know!)
It was all working fine when I got in (mind you I still haven't figured out how to adjust the timings for the central heating!!)

It might be that the gas and electricity at the new address are with a different company, and when you call him back he'll arrange to take the property over to his supplier.

    Above is correct.

Gas and electricity will be connected and there should be a letter addressed to 'The Occupier".

Note your gas and electricity meter readings(and also for water) and contact that company with the readings. You are stuck with that supplier for a few weeks anyway.

Before you contact your present supplier(and possibly jump from frying pan into fire), ascertain who is the cheapest supplier for your property. Estimate your consumption.

I can understand why you want at least electricity so you have lighting and can boil a kettle but why do you think it is going to be cold enough to need blankets on the 12th April? Surely you will not have your heating on then??
