Hi

We have a ds who is 4 and a half with autism.

we have started him on ABA therapy with good results.

part of this therapy will include continual ongoing recruitment of tutors to carry out the therapy.

all small children are vulnerable and those with autism particularly so, two new tutors that we want to take on do not have current CRB checks because they are 1st year psychology students and have not had any jobs that required them or have CRBs over three years old.

I have spoken to the CRB and they say you cannot get them CRB checked, even through an umbrella organisation.

The only option is to go through a care agency

the ones we have spoken to will only do it if we put them on their books and the salary is then doubled, or another one will do it but only if we buy a package of other services that we will never need or use for £700.

this is madness, we will have to spend @ £20,000 per annum on ds`s therapy and we cant afford another £3,000 per year just to get CRB checks

what are we meant to do?

How ridiculous! I don't know whether this would work, but... have you tried asking their uni/college to apply for the checks, and you can reimburse the cost? I've no idea whether this is possible though :o

I'd of thought that they'd have had them done through uni if they're coming into contact with vulnerable children and adults, otherwise they should not be left unattended with the vulnerable group.

  • Try the OFSTED site - is it worth them registering under The Childcare Register?

This would involve OFSTED carrying out the CRB check.

  • the tutors could get their own crb check done through an umberella company, you could pay that fee for them, was £54 2 years ago.
    hope this helps x

have a look at this website, i've been looking into it recently, pm me if you'd like some help

these checks are a waste of time and money. Not everyone is out to molest or hurt your children and if they will a check is not going to stop them. They may have abused hundreds of children and just not got caught so their check will come back clear. Will that make your child any safer?

I hate the way the world is that everyone who comes within 5 feet of a child needs checked. Its a load of paranoid nonsense. I am aware that there are some sick people in the world but they are only a tiny tiny percent of the population. The checks are pretty useless and offer only protection against convicted people. Not every abuser is caught.

Before anyone asks yes i do have child, and i still think its a load of crap.

I have to say I agree with you Metalgal, but that's the way the world works nowadays... most abusers are within the family and the ones to worry about are the ones who haven't been caught.

As a student Nurse I only had one CRB check prior to starting the course and none in the next three years even though we were working with vulnerable children and adults. We just had to sign a declaration that we had not committed any new offences. As previously mentioned, there is too much reliance on CRB checking.

Students on a Psychology degree won't normally have any contact with vulnerable people (or anyone for that matter) as it's an academic rather than a vocational course.

OP, is it a requirement that these students have a CRB or do you just want it for your own reassurance?

The university is a last hope really and it is not something the uni is meant to do so they may so no immediately.

eg we couldnt put vacancies on their official jobsite because we were individuals and couldnt prove ourselves trustworthy!

The students dont normally have a CRB, and their work with us is compl;etely independent of the Uni.

The umbrella companies that are approprite and that will do it are the care agencies and that is the sign on, pay our fee and keep paying us response we have had from them.

Metalgal , it might interest you to know that I deliver training on safeguarding for the county council , so I am perfectly aware of the limitations of CRB and the new VBS,

I have to say what an unhelpful, cynical and depressing post to put, it wasnt helpful or pleasant.

The CRB check is out of date immediately, by its nature, however it serves a number of purposes including a psychological and behaviour modification one that will complement the other things we would do as hopefully good parents
