Our British Gas 2010 tariff finishes on 30 April - and I thought that First Utility might be a good one to change to.... but, now we're retired we spend quite a lot of the year out of the country.

How would we fare with this one not being able to check our meters and put our consumption on line?

Any suggestions for being able to get a good deal under these circumstances?

You are on Price Protection April 2010. It's important you make the distinction as BG have another tariff ending in June 2010 (called Price Promise) and it's not half as good as the one you're on as you've been fixed since 2005 or 2006. Bearing in mind it takes 4-6 weeks to switch, be sure you don't come out of the tariff early else you will incur a penalty (I think it's £30 for gas and £25 for electricity, but not exactly sure) for early-exit, plus you want to keep your cheap rate for as long as possible, as you're currently saving 30%+ on todays rates. I've been told we're going to get a letter offering a new fixed price tariff in the 2nd week in April, which we'll have to opt out of if we don't want to automatically roll off PP April 2010 to whatever the new tariff is.

I'm not exactly sure how First Utility work, as I've never been supplied or billed by them. You can get someone else to read the meter for you, such as a family member or trusted friend.

Are you planning to only visit China, Iran, Texas or Burma? Otherwise why will there be any difficulty inputting your consumption online???
