"The Potteries" is a collective term for a group of 6 towns. They're relatively close together, but the SOT traffic is legendary. Although it's "Stoke on Trent" the city center is actually Hanley. There's a good shopping center (with a permanent basement market) in Hanley (with factory shops), and a five minute walk from there is the Potteries Museum & art gallery- a good 3 hours worth.

Stapely Water gardens is a nice half day out for the age group you're with too.

Whilst you're there, try the Oatcakes! :)

    HI

Matlock, Ashbourne, Buxton, Bakewell etc are all good to look round, stop for a cuppa and a cake, browse the antique shops. Chatsworth is great and a full day out by itself.
