TV Property Shows

Are the various TV property shows (Homes Under the Hammer, Property Ladder, Location, etc.) actually good resources for educating people about buying, renovating and selling homes? I have a bunch of these shows that I have recorded on my Virgin box, but I am thinking that maybe I could better spend my time doing some other type of property research.

Thanks

Dean

If you like property !!!!!! (which I do) then they're fun - and they can give you some ideas of what not to do! For serious investment advice, they're not so great; they're recorded as entertainment and not to educate anyone.

It's probably a good idea to keep an idea of when they were recorded. People buying property in 2005 then selling it in 2007 would probably have made a profit even if they hadn't done it up. Also bear in mind that those shows often forget to mention tax and other rather important things!

Consider them to be entertainment. It is probably worth looking through some now and then going and educating yourself, then taking another look at the progs to see how your attitudes have changed

Given that Location x 3' s Phil Spencers property firm went bust last year it's probably best taken with a pinch of salt. Funny he never mentions that?

Beany seemed to know the score, though the days of flipping properties for a quick buck would appear to be over.

    Thanks everybody.

Can you recommend which has the most credibility? Or are they all as "bad" as each other?

None of them have any credibility. Notice how they rarely ever mention exact sums either for purchase or development. When the property boom was going on almost any fool could have made money from buying and selling property but making a career out of it in the long-term is for experts only and certainly not for the risk-averse.

I blame some of those series for duping ordinary, working-class folks into believing they could and actually deserved to live like people much, much more wealthy and make fortunes while they were at it

I love seeing derelict homes being brought back into use on HUTH, but it does give the impression that minor repairs and a coat of paint are all that is needed, without mentioning the various building regs and certificates you would be expected to provide the solicitors of any purchasers. They also invariably hide the true costs of renovation by not including time spent doing the work. Anyone doing it for a living would have to account for more than the cost of materials. But it's just a bit of fun and mindless daytime telly.

I think Beany has more credibility than most and it is far from unknown for the projects in her shows to go wrong and/or overbudget etc. And, of course, you can always just sit back and enjoy the view;).
