    im no expert, but id imagine the dealer takes a big chunk of the labour rate for themselves

    In which case they're clearly incompetent, and you should remind them of this.

    There's no need to replace a perfectly good piece of metal for such a minor problem.

    Remind them that they're the only garage who has serviced your car, that they damaged it, and that you expect them to repair it. If they do not, you will take the vehicle elsewhere, have it repaired properly, and then bill them for the difference. Any refusal to pay that bill and you'll be off to court.

    ......or the wrong thread type helicoil fitted in wich case a new plug would be needed no garentee that a helicoil would suit the original plug have had this in rare cases.

    theres mobile guys that go around all day fitting helicoil or similar , they could get it done for cheap
