How to find my bank account...

I have a really old bank account that my parents opened for me with Abbey National back when I was about...2?
It was a passbook saver which I put my birthday money into and which was signed by my mum.
Fast forward 22 years and I've lost the passbook, it should be under one address and my mum who's signature is on it is no longer alive.
When I had the passbook, about 2 years ago, I tried to access the account as I had about £50 in there which I wanted to transfer into my ISA. However the woman at Abbey/Santander whatever it's called said I needed my mum's signature. She was abroad at the time and despite having my passport and being over 21 they wouldn't let me have anything from it or close the account.
How can I locate/close this account. They've made it really, really difficult so far and from what I've heard they don't make it easy is general.
I have proof of my old address, can get a photocopy of my mum's death certificate and have photo ID. Where do I start to find this lost account.

If the account was in her name re you then it would have been part of her estate upon her death.
