Laptop Purchase Advice

Good suggestion.Seems that no one actually wants to recommend you a laptop. Here is a Samsung R519 that will comfortably cover your needs for £304.
A couple more:
Inspiron 15 (N0054515), £399
Inspiron 1764 (N0076402), £478.990 -
Ever heard of 'ultra portable laptops', like the Macbook Air or Thinkpad X series? They are designed with portability with mind. Most have 11"-12" screen, most models before 2009 have no optical drive (they can use external drives, and as m5rcc said they are becoming less useful), yet nobody think that they cannot be main computers. So why a netbook cannot be used in the same manner?
Who thinks of an 'ultra portable laptop' as a main computer? Please...stop.

I wouldn't recommend a netbook as a main computer or at all, unless someone as a specific requirement for one.
I actually owned a Samsung NC10. I got rid of it after about 2 months, after getting frustrated with it. Laptop all the way for me.0 -
Rather than listening to us why not try one out at the store and see whether you like them?
Here is a refub netbook for £180

and a semi-decent ultra portable for £330

Rather than listening to us why not try one out at the store......
Still banging on that old drum?
Don't be a hypocrite... on the one hand writing "rather than listening...", but on the other posting links to a Netbook and an "Ultra Portable".
Anyway the links posted don't offer particularly good value, as you can pick up a 10" screen refurb Netbook for £134 and a similarly described 14" screen 'Ultra Portable' for £264.
To strike a balance, you can obtain a fully featured laptop, the Toshiba Satellite L300D-242 for £244. Full specs here (Press F5 to refresh the page if necessary).0
