Hi
OH and I are thinking of going up to Scotland for a couple of weeks later in the year. We have a car so we want to tour about---has anyone any ideas of good areas to visit? We love sightseeing and walking.
We will be hiring a cottage/caravan so we can take the dog!
Thanks

Don't forget the South West. The Galloway coast and forest parks are fantastic. Most people pass them by. You can turn left at Gretna!.
But having said that Loch Lomond and the Trossachs take some beating.
If you have time and you want to see a great part of Scotland, head for the Western Isles. Get the ferry from Oban to Barra (5 hours). Spend a couple of days in Barra, and then get the small ferry to Eriskay (40 minutes). From there you can work your way up through the Uists to Stronoway and back to the mainland via Ullapool. If the weather is kind you will remember it for the rest of your life.

theres loads - Personally, i would suggest, 1st, the capital, Edinburgh - the old town is really historic, you have loch lomand, highlands, oban, stornoway etc... there is LOADS of places to go
remember your raincoat and digital camera - with loads of memory- if your going to spend 3 weeks or so up here, you will use at minimum 5gb - its easily done lol

I live near Stilring and would have to say its truely beautiful. It has the advantge of being very central so good for Glasgow/ Edinburgh/ the Trossachs.
I saw someone post about Dumfries and Galloway. It is probably my favourite holiday spot. We rent a really nice caravan for just under two hundred per week there on a site with great fascillities and lovely views over the bay to a lighthouse.0 -
Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather in Scotland, only the wrong clothes!0

Having worked in Lewis, Harris and North Uist for 9 months between May 05 and Jan 06, I can thoroughly recommend the Western Isles. In that time I visited almost everything, believe me!
Timsgarry beach in a Force 9 even!
Don't end up on Harris/Lewis on a Sunday - it's closed! OK, not entirely true, as you can actually get food at The Harris Hotel and at a pub in Balallan, plus you can get a pint in Stornoway after about 4.30pm IF you buy your dinner.

Hello gilly41
Have you had a look at the Scotland sub board? There's a thread called 'Planning a hol in Scotland and like wildlife?' which I started, it might give you some tips.;)
Have a lovely holiday.

If you get the chance, have some Cream o' Galloway ice cream. I'm not sure how widely it's available, but lots of shops in Dumfries & Galloway sell it, and it's lovely. The farm where it's made even has a Visitor Attraction with facilities including adventure playground, nature trails and, of course, ice cream!
