Stopping bank payment made online

Hi,
I use online banking to do everything since I hate being on the phone for 5+ minutes to do something I can do with a few clicks...
So I made a payment to my landlord for rent online, then went out to get the post and had a letter saying they had changed their account and that I had to pay it to a new one.
I started ringing Santander to get it stopped. Got cut off 3 times, got referred to e-commerce department twice (rang them twice and got through to the normal Customer Service department) and the last lady I spoke to said I would have to wait for the payment to clear and then call to dispute it.
Does anyone know if this is the right way? What do I do? Do I wait?
I lost the will to live calling the call centre, being cut off, typing in my 16 digit card number. I hate call centres. I used to work in one and that nearly killed me.
Thannks for reading.

What day did you make the payment?
Is the landlord's old account closed yet or is it still open? Have you told your landlord that you've done this?0 -

I did this today, apparently the old account was closed. I heard this from my housemate who actually got phoned up by the landlord.0 -
It should be possible for the bank to cancel/recall the payment. You may need to speak to someone if a specialist department, but customer service should (I say should, as this is Abbey we are talking about) be able to put you through to them.0

While you need to chase your money, you need to inform your Landlord they didn't give sufficient notice that they had changed their account details and the month's rent has gone astray.
Tell them as soon as you get the money they will be paid the rent.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

If someone who runs a business (and your Landlord is a business) closes their account and doesn't leave at least a month to tell people the new account number then they are a fault.

I like that. They can wait!0 -
if the account is indeed truly closed then it's likely the payment will simply be returned to you, I'm not sure what you're saying to the people on the telephone but if you're not clear and concise about what your problem is they're just going to get confused.
I suggest you call them, say "I made a Bacs payment to my landlord from my personal account using online banking and have just been informed by my landlord that they are using a different account, therefore, how can this payment be reversed?"0 -
If it's been done within the last 2 hours just ask the advisor to go into the "recent payments" screen of the bill payment (i'm guessing that's how it was done) if they do it correctly your account will be as normal and it will just look like it never went out.
Don't be fobbed off, they can do it, they just choose not to!I am a Mortgage Adviser

If its a faster payment then surely it has gone - if the account is open it will be there, if not it should bounce back to you.0

No, Santander doesn't sent out payments via FP, they only accept them.I am a Mortgage Adviser

I finally got through to someone at their e-banking thing and she said the payment had already gone, so it was out of Santander's hands now.
I'm hoping the payment will just bounce back if the account I paid it into has been closed. Such a pain.
