EON passing debt to debt collection agency before billing me

I left EON as my gas and electricity supplied in early December to move to a cheaper tariff.
I recieved a letter in early January apologising for the delay in my final bill but to assure me it is being processed. I few days ago I recieved a letter threatening to pass my debt to a debt collection agency if I did not pay within 7 days although I still had not recieved a bill from EON. I spoke to EON who said there had been a mistake on their system and that a bill had been issued but they would send out a new one.
I asked EON to call off the debt collectors as I would not pay a bill I hadn't seen but was told this could not be done as it is all automated through their system.
Today I have had numerous calls from the debt collection agency with a recorded message asking me to call them.
What are my rights in this situation and can my credit rating be affected by being reported to this debt collection agency?

Hi I read with interest your post - the same thing happened to me - received letter saying apologies for delay in final bill - I think (saying without looking) it took a good couple of months since i left the company for my final bill to come but prior to that i received the debt collection agency letter - complete with added charge - have complained to EON but to no avail - I now receive two to three very harsh phone calls per week from debt agency - basically I moved into property and there was a delay with EON accepting they had my meters - I wanted to change suppliers - EON are very expensive - it took 10 months for them to sort it and I just cant pay all bill at once - what have EON said to you???

Hi meggy90 - Ok, you are being harressed by a Collect Agency because of EON's screw-up

Write ,Do Nor Email or phone, EON heading the letter Complaint, pointing out that you are being haressed by XYZ Collection Agency for payment of a bill that EON have not yet even sent to you, and that if this distressing harressment continues, you will be billing them for £15 per per letter or phone call
    Good Luck

Was there any debt on your account before you initiated the tranfer away from them, if so could this have been the debt that has been passed to the debt collection agency. Also did you have an online account with E.ON as if you did then you wouldn't be sent a final bill through the post.

Is it a real debt collection agency? Eon did the same to me (or was it Scottish Power) it was just a pretend one, after about a week of me being sent my final bill.
  • I beleive E.ON mostly use BCW nowadays so if the letter's from them then it will be real

    Hi meggy90,

Sorry about the problems that you are having with your final bill.

There has obviously been some sort of error somewhere.

stewie_griffin make a very good point, do you have an online account? if you do, you will have been sent an email to advise you that your bill is ready to see online, customers with online accounts don't receive paper bills through the post.

E.ON should have stopped the debt collection whilst your final bill is being produced.

Your credit rating can be affected, but is does depend on what stage the debt collection has reached, this is something that I would advise you to ask.

If I can help any further, please just let me know.
