Direct line 'named driver' NCB

DIrect Line like a few others give the ability for 'Named Drivers' on the policy their own years of no claims.
Due to having 1 car my partner has been named driver on my policy now for years, now we have bought a second car and he wants to get his own NCD, if he goes to someone else he has ZERO NCD which results in massive premium or a big fat no we won't insure you.
Due to this we are going to have to stay with Direct Line so he can get his 'Direct Line' NCB built up as policy holder.
This is my question and I do intend to ring them when we go to take it out but just wanted to see if anyone knows before hand ....
If as 'named driver' he has 3 years NCD so takes his own policy out and they give him those 3 years NCD after a year with his own policy if he chose to leave Direct Line would he then have to take 4 years NCB or just 1 year as the other 3 are Direct Line'Named driver' ones?
Hope that makes sense....!!

at the end of the first year it would be 3 years named driver no claims discount and 1 years ncd in his own name, if at the end of that year he went to a different insurer he would do so with 1 years ncd0 -
I use to work for them and I helped roll this out... Back in 2005 it was the intention that at the end of the 1st year like others say will be 3 named and 1 ncd = the equivelent 4 years with them only... Table below shows what I was told (may have been tweaked since so please clarify with them)
Max bonus is 5 years.
Current 0 - 3 named
11/12 1 - 3 named
12/13 2 - 3 named
13/14 3 - 2 named
14/15 4 - 1 named
15/16 5 -0
As you can see that by time he completes 2 full years he will get the equivelent of 5 years but he wont be able to protect it until he has 4 years earnt.
Also what you may want to try and look at is if he takes out hisown policy can other insurers recognise the time he has been claim free as a second car/introductory discount!I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.0
