ADT Alarm problem

Hi,
We have an ex-ADT alarm system that we'd like to change the user code on. However, in order to do this you need the "Engineer Code" (which, incidentally, is only of use when the alarm is unset, so asking this question isn't a security threat) - does anyone out there know what code ADT use please? We're pretty sure that ADT use a standard number, not a different one for each house etc. We live in Herts, just in case anyone is aware of regional variations.
We'd get ADT to visit etc. to change the user code, but they have already told us that:
(a) they won't give us our own engineer code, so we would have to get them back every time we wanted a code change.
(b) they want silly money for a 5 minute visit.

Can anyone out there help please? Thanks.

Polybear.

I had an ADT installed a few years ago, the factory code was 9999, however take note that some are set to 1234

Do you know who installed it (number may be on bell box). I sweet talked the engineer number from the installer 10 years after it was installed, and the engineers manual from the manufacturer (which tells you how to override it - I said I wanted to fit a new battery, but needed the engineer code to stop the tamper going off..). It's a different alarm, so no use for you.., but you could try the same line.

They are always reluctant to give out this info for obvious reasons, but it is your alarm, and you should have been issued it when it was installed, so that you can change user codes. They shouldn't hold you to ransom by keeping this info to themselves.

    There is a forum here:

you'll probably hit the same reluctance, but you may find an installer in your area who will come and reset it for you for less money.

Some models have more than one level of access, engineer mode, superuser (to change codes), and normal user. There is no reason why superuser codes shouldn't be issued to the end user. If you didn't have it installed, maybe the old owner knows it?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
