Samsung Monitor/TV developing a fault

Hi all,

I bought a Samsung PC Monitor with built in TV Tuner from PC World. It is 1 week off 3 year old. For the past 2 year the monitor has been used as a TV in the bedroom as I purchased a laptop so no longer use the PC.

The problem started 2 days ago. Everytime I turn the TV on the picture is blinking constantly so I have to turn it off and back on. Now today the problem seems to be getting worse. I turned it on and the on/off button was blinking but no picture. I get it working but there is definately something wrong. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I've checked the leads incase they were accidently loose so it seems like it is an internal problem.

I have found the receipt and the samsung warranty card which was in with the instructions. It says the product is under warranty for 3 year but PC World has not stamped/signed the warranty so this warranty could have been off another product.

What should I expect if I was to take the TV back to PC World with the receipt?

Thanks,

Vicx

Is it fair to assume that you've checked the instructions (particularly the troubleshooting section) to be sure that a blinking light on the on/off switch does not mean something specific?

If so, you can take it back and ask nicely whether they will contact Samsung and see if the warranty will be honoured.

If they say no, you can then tell them that you want to exercise your rights under the Sale of Goods Act, and that you are requesting that they repair it at no charge to you. I don't think they will try to argue that it's reasonable for a TV/monitor to fail in less than 3 years, but with PC World you never know.

If they do, you will probably win in the end, but you may have to put in a bit more work (e.g. have it inspected and have a report drawn up saying it has failed due to an inherent defect).

I would not worry too much about the warranty card not being stamped, most manufacturers can tell from the serial number of the item, but as you have the receipt then there will be no argument form them I am sure. Give them a call and see what they say, it will be far easier then trying to exercise your rights under the SOGA with PC world (you would need to prove that the item had an inherent fault).

Thanks for the replies. I have checked the troubleshooting section of the manual and the problem is not listed. It does seem like it is to do with the power lead or the power connection in the back of the TV. There is a crackling noise when I touch the lead to pull it in/out the back of the TV. Possibly a snapped wire in the lead, not sure how that could have happened though as the wire is not jammed between furniture and the TV has not been moved about. If it is not a loose wire in the lead then it could be a fault in the connection of the TV.

Samsung will repair if it's under guarantee. Either you or PC World (whoever books it in) would have to send a copy of your proof of purchase to them, but once they get that they'll get it sent off.

I will give PC World a call in the morning and see what they say. I didn't know the warranty was for 3 year, usually they only give 12 months warranty. My TV wont even turn on now. I had a look through a few forums and it seems to be a problem with the power supply inside the TV - a common fault with Samsung TV's. The problem normally happems just as the warranty has expired but thankfully there's still a few days left on mine. Hopefully they will repair it free of charge.

I have just phoned Samsung and they are arranging for the monitor/tv to be collected for repair. As the warranty card was not filled in by PC World at the time of purchase, I thought that would void the warranty. Samsung said it does not matter as the serial number is showing it is still under warranty. I have the original receipt but they dont need to see this either. :)

On the front of the warranty card is states:
Caution Please ensure the form above is completed at the time of purchase and present it to qualify for under guarantee service, otherwise your guarantee may be affected.

That must be for store guarantee? Everytime I have bought an electrical item, the shop has never offered to fill this warranty card in. I will make sure they do next time so the store guarantee wont be affected.
