Pop up windows

I have been having problems with pop-up windows coming up every 30 seconds or so on my computer. Any hints on how I can stop these? They all seem to come up in a grey box with a blue header saying "Messenger Service". They usually say that my system registry needs cleaning or do I want to buy some viagra??!!

They are very annoying and I want them to go away!!! Help!!!

    Start > Run

    Type in services.msc and hit enter

    On the new screen find the service called "Messenger" and disable it :)

    no need , Merciless has the correct answer

    I would make sure that your version of Windows is up to date by going to www.windowsupdate.com and making sure that you have all the critical updates and Service packs (SP1A + SP2) as Messenger (not MSN Messenger by the way, different thing) is normally turned off when you do the updates

    I was going to ask this question too as the messenger pop-ups are driving OH NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Techno, if you haven't done it, and are on broadband, go to https://www.windowsupdate.com, this will make sure your PC is patched.
