Santander application

I applied online for Santander's credit card with 15 month interest free balance transfer as I had a large unexpected expense to pay for. Not having heard for two weeks I called them up and was surprised to find that they had no record at all of my application.

I was then transferred to have my application taken with an operator. More than 5 working days later I called up to be told that the application was declined - 6 days before I made the call.

This brings up two questions:

1. Is Santander's customer service really so bad that, first they lose your online application, second they don't tell you in any kind of rush that your application's been refused?

2. I've never been turned down for a credit card before, would this affect my credit rating?

As for the expense, I'm resigned to paying that out of my ISA - it's not earning anything anyway!

Looking forward to your responses.

Yes, they're abysmal. The fact you tried them after only 2 weeks means you've never dealt with them before :) I'm 6 weeks tomorrow and still counting .... have been accepted, just waiting on the card and notice of my credit limit ...

Being turned down for a card doesn't affect your credit report.

Having 2 searches from 2 separate applications might have a minor effect, but nothing to worry about. And will have nil effect after 6 months if you don't apply for anything else.

I applied on line for my card early in December. Agreement arrived 7th December and was signed and returned immediately. Card arrived 19th December and balance transfer was initiated. As an Alliance & Leicester current account holder I was 'entitled' to a fee free transfer. A fee was applied but was returned in my next statement after speaking to a cusomer rep at a local branch. So do check to see if you qualify for the fee free balance transfer. One thing I don't like is the statement split into 4 a3 sheets of paper rather than 2 a4 sheets.
