depends what you want it for, every day snaps or some good quality photos

If its everyday snaps that you can print then i would suggest a camera with between 4 - 6 Mbs of resolution with this you can print very god A4 size photos,
look for one with an optical zoom , if you use digital zoom then you loose resolution,
something that you can use normal AA batteries and also one with a common memory card like SD or compact flash as these seem to be cheaper

I've been happy with a Cannon PowerShot A520. See examples of its 4 megapixel pictures are here, but you'll need to login to photobox to see the pictures in full resolution. The Canon is fine on automatic for snaps, but you can also go fully manual for various effects (such as long exposure shots - from memory the picture of Parliament was a 6 second exposure).

I think this model has now been replaced by a 6 megapixel device.

yes this is true but as said in previous post for family snaps i wouldn't bother with any more than 6M pixels, unless its a bargain

You may not want to pay this much, but have just bought this one from Currys Digital(Was Dixons) for £130 plus a 1GB card from eBay £30 . But it does movies and photos, the movies are full screen when played back on my 32" TV and look pretty good. And the LCD viewfinder is nearly as big as the back 2.5" nice and big so you can see what you are looking at.
