I am in negotiations with my local car dealer. I have been offered a deal for £137 a month for 38 months + a final payment of £2280. I'd like to negotiate this down but I am trying to find an insider who can give an idea of my position of power. As it is July/August, I'm hoping that they're keen to do a deal. Is it likely to be asking too much for a deal of £120 a month (about a 10% price cut)?
Anyone got any experience of this?
Thanks

Hello BillyWiz
I'll move your thread over to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board, where it should get more views and responses.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

What are you buying, Billy? Your negotiating power will depend, to some extent, on how good the current offer is.Can I help?0

Check http://www.honestjohn.co.uk - clik This Weeks Best Deals (on the right of his site).
You'll then have details of GENUINE 'deals' available, on all models.
THEN.... see what your dealer is offering, in comparisson to those listed on HJ's links!!
THEN... see if you can haggle a few $£$£$ more.
& as mentioned, what are you buying????

Thanks Guys
I'm looking to replace my Corsa. I have 1,000 GM Credit Card points so am limited to Vauxhalls and just want a 2nd car to get to work but am trying to reduce monthly payments as I still have a year to run on existing car loan
Thanks Vansboy
I think I got my answer from the Honest John site:
If you are a good negotiator, during comparatively slack months such as December you might get 10% to 12% off 'list price'. The best way to achieve this is to know precisely what the 'on-the-road' price of the car should be, take off the cost of Vehicle Excise Duty and the £25 First Registration tax, then subtract 15% from the remainder. On the premise that 3%-5% profit is better than no profit at all, many dealers will play ball, particularly towards the end of the month.0 -
The first registration fee in the UK is £38, not £25, so HJ's page needs to check where it is getting its info from if they are stating £25.
If you let us know the purchase price he's offering and how much deposit you are offering to put down we can get the deal checked out for you - it's impossible to see how good the deal is unless we know the actual figures involved - do you know what APR the dealer is building your quote on?
Bear in mind if it is another Corsa you are buying then they'll be very keen to sell as current model is about to be replaced. Discounts anywhere c, 20-30% discounts are not uncommon on volume brand cars at the moment as manuf'rs are pushing hard for high Sep' '56 plate sales. Buying a Ford or Vauxhall at the moment with only 10-12% discount is a poor deal.“Official Company Representative
