Whoever earns the most, goes to work to support the household. There, problem solved. Not rocket science is it?

Oh, just a thought (I am probably so wrong with this), but reading between the lines of your post, I swear you are trying to get the tax payer to fund your "both stay at home most of the day" idea?

But that's a complaint, surely, about the policy of supporting the working poor, be they relatively poor due to lower working hours, being self employed or working in a low wage job. What does it matter what the policy is - it is what it is, and yes, it's there to be taken advantage of.

I've been in the position you describe, working all hours of the day and some into the night, so my hubby could stay at home, look after the kids and support me once I came in from work. And we made that decision because I earned the most, so became the breadwinner. It was a dreadful lifestyle. I hardly saw my children, had quite a stressful job and ruined my health along the way. I wouldn't wish that lifestyle on anyone and applaud the OP, who at least is thinking of his family and what is best for them. And is working, whether or not you think much of the amount he earns.

Who is to say he, or any self employed person currently not earning very much, won't be the next Duncan Bannatyne, employing thousands up and down Britain? At least his children won't be dumped in some child care place somewhere, herded about like cattle.

If more people worked part time, maybe more people who wanted a job but don't currently have one would get one.
