Hello
I am a natural dark blonde but like my hair to be a lighter blonde so have always had my hair highlighted at the hairdressers. It always look good but I just can't afford it anymore.
I am quite willing to try a dye at home but have heard conflicting ideas of what type to use.
The hairdresser always uses a high lift tint, not bleach so I'm not sure whether to go for an ash blonde or non-ash blonde. I also have no idea what brand to use.
Any advice, or can anyone direct me to a different website which might help please?
Many thanks.

Hi definately go for an ash colour as light as possible, so you wont end up with a brassy colour.0

Hi,
I cant comment on colour (cos I'm a brunette) but brand wise stick with l'oreal excellence (good colour/true to box shade). Schwarzkopf is a good colour but comes out darker so go a shade lighter than desired. Nice an easy is again good colour but comes out darker.0 -

Brilliant. Thanks for that. There's such a large choice that I feel really quite lost when looking at them all!LBM February 2008. DFD March 2013 19 August 2011Debt at LBM £14,395.48. Debt Now £00 -
Hi,
Have you got a Sally hair supply store near you? You can actually buy the colours used in hairdressers from them and you don't need a trade card to purchase (it's just a little more expensive without one).
Maybe you could call your hairdressers and tell a small white lie, say your moving out of the area or something and would like to tell your new hairdresser what colour they used. They will probably tell you and then you can purchase the extact colour from Sally's.
If not, then I've always found colours by Wella to be good! The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.0 -

I'm no expert but I think you have to establish whether you are a warm blonde or cool blonde, and chose the dye accordingly.
I have warm skin tone and dark blonde hair. I have worked alot abroad so my hair is bleached by the sun quite a bit turning a honey blonde with very fair bits in the front.
Last winter I was very low on money but not liking how the grown out hightlights looked. I bought a highlight kit from Aldi for E 2.00 I think it was, after much research and reading up exactly how to do it online, I drafted teen daughter and we did it - came out great looking very natural and I was very pleased. Last mother's day daughter paid for me to have it done professionally and it came out very brassy, tacky looking and not at all natural - just goes to show...No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0 -

I suppose I'd be a cool blonde then. I am naturally very pale and rarely get any sort of tan.
I get my hair done at the hairdressers every time and have never hated a colour so I think you were unlucky.
I once dyed my hair at home many years ago and it came out an orangey colour. Not quite what I was expecting. From recollection it was not an ash colour, but as I've had highlights put in my hair ever since, I didn't know how they would affect how a new colour might turn out.LBM February 2008.
