The variety will depend on where in the UK, it is to be planted and what will the grapes be used for. eg. for eating fresh or making wine, red or white grapes, seedless or seeded.

Ask on Freecycle whether there's anyone locally with an outside vine. Vines root themselves easily, so you may find a Freecycler who has a spare rooting. Look in the library for a general gardening book with advice about vines. Vines need lots of summer and autumn sun for grapes to ripen - plus you need the right variety - some varieties will only ripen in a greenhouse, but they all look super growing over a pergola or up a wall. Your mum may be able to train a bit of the vine up a south-facing wall where the grapes are more likely to ripen. Vines need ruthless pruning which you must do in January or the cut end will bleed and drip sticky sap for weeks, encouraging mould to grow, too. Once your vine is growing happily, it will give you all pleasure for years and years.
    Nice to save.
