Car insurance groups?????

KG
KG Posts: 333 Forumite
I am looking at buying a second hand car at the and a lot of the ads quote 'low insurance group' as a selling point. I get that this means it's cheaper to insure, but can anyone give me perspective on this?

For example 'Insurance group 4' doesn't mean anything to me as I am not sure how far the scale extends or whether '1' is the highest or the lowest.

Any ideas???

It goes up to insurance group 30. Used to be 20 but a few years ago it was extended. So I would say a 4 would be pretty low. But insurance also goes down to age and area etc aswell! As your on the westcoast I would imagine its a pretty low car crime area. What island do you stay on?

    This is a useful site:
    http://www.parkers.co.uk/insurance/#ig=0

You can select by car (so if you have a car in mind), or by Group to see which cars fall into that category.

Essentially, the lower the group, the cheaper the car will be to insure

I thought I'd heard that too but the parkers link above still only goes up to 20

Group is a guide only (lower is cheaper) but other factors can be important.

According to the parkers link mine is a group 20 and OH’s is a 16. Both got renewed early this year. As usual adding slightly older OH to my policy chopped £20 off my premium but for some reason her final premium came out £40 more than mine despite my car being worth more, considerably faster and I cover twice the business miles.

I suspect a lot depends on what sort of customers/cars the companies are trying to get at the particular time you take the policy out.
