Renting House - Loft and Shed full

I got the keys for my new home on Friday and decided to go and have an explore around the property (I'm not moving in for another 2 weeks) and I discovered that the loft has a lot of (presumably) the landlords possessions in (bank statements, medals which look like stock for a business, etc) and the shed is full (vacuum, garden furniture, old rusty bbq, etc).

Is it normal for these spaces to be full or is it reasonable to request that they are emptied? I don't want to create a bad relationship with the landlord and obviously, not sure if I'll need these spaces yet but if I leave it too long I imagine it will be too late to report it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

  • Hi,

I think it's entirely fair for you to assume that you should have the use of garage and loft - unless it was specifically mentioned that the LL wanted to exclude that space. Most people need to have the storage of the garage and the loft. Does the contract say anything?

Have you rented directly from the LL or via an agent. If an agent give them a call to discuss.

The tenancy agreement does include shed but doesn't mention the loft at all. The house was via a letting agency but when I collected the keys they said that from now on I deal direct with the LL.
