Agreed. For those of us who were taught to drive correctly then this should be second nature before starting the ignition of any car.

Indeed, the old basic " cockpit check "before starting, and after stopping.

It takes a couple of seconds.

My daughter did the same, well almost, if the car is driveable I would get the repair done privately. Can some one from your office have a good look so see if you can drive it?

After reviewing it again, I do not think this would be considered "driveable". The backend bumper is completely off. The police would immediately stop the car if they saw it driven in this state.

This is what my policy states about excess:

    Compulsory Excess: £250

    Renewal date is 23/05/2010

God willing all this stuff will work out and in future I will be getting into the habit of placing the car in 1st gear as well as pulling up the HB.

Any mention of a voluntary excess?

Whatever, I suspect if you can get it repaired for £750 (or even a grand) you will still come out ahead against going through the insurance. (unless of course you make a habit of bumping into things :D )

I assume this was a fairly slow speed accident, bumpers generally are clipped on and can often be clipped back on fairly easily. Post some pictures and you’ll get better advice

Thanks for all your advice guys.

    • The excess is £250.00
    • I do not have No Claims Bonuses (this is first year)
    • The first year would have been 23/05/10
If I was risking say a 3+ year No Claims Record, I probably would have had the repairs done privately.

Any other tips before I call em?

You realise you have to call your insurance company and tell them whether you claim or not don't you?

I've gone through insurance and have arranged for a courtesy car. Bearing in mind the damage plus the courtesy car, I think this will be pretty pricey.

That is serious damage. It certainly won't be cheap to repair.

  • Crikey, that does look like a bit of a mess - could even be a write off.

Agreed. New rear panel, new bumper cover, bumper, rear light, rear valance etc etc looks expensive, especially with labour and painting. Luckily your rear hatch has escaped the worst.

  • Please don't tell me it's a write-off?

I was under the impression that a Write-Off = when the repairs of the car cost more than the actual value of the car.

I think the value is around £3-3500.

I can't see the reapirs going over that can they?
