Perfect House or is there always a compromise?

  • After viewing approx 30 houses we had identified two things we definitely wouldn't compromise on:
Decend sized garden without being overlooked
Location - we were quite picky about the areas we wanted to live in (although we did end up offering on a house which wasn't in one of our preffered locations but we ended up falling in love with the area as well as the house!). There were a lot of definite no-no areas though

    Things we did compromise on:
    Downstairs bathroom
    Small second bedroom
    Odd shaped rooms (old property)
    Rendered exterior (wanted stone)

But there is a gradient of "redecoration". Our house had grubby walls in a few rooms; kids drawings on them etc, we just had to prep and paint, easy peasy, each room has taken a day at the most and didn't cost much. Easy to do this if you just want to change the colour scheme.

At the other end of the scale you have to have walls replastered, rip down wallpaper that's been up for 40 years, etc etc. Much bigger job, may have to hire equipment, get pros in or have days off work to finish it in a decent timescale, etc. I would say only this latter type of redecorating would be reflected in the price. So just consider which end of the scale you are at.

I would probably be happy to take on the following:

    Paint walls (maybe plastering too)
    Replace flooring
    New kitchen and bathroom
    New doors
Garden - planting, paving, gates, fencing etc

Not really sure how much this would all cost though!!!!

I wouldn't fancy having to do major expensive stuff e.g. roofing, totally new windows, dry rot, damp proofing etc etc.
