Resettlement = council?

  • Just leaving the forces myself (medical) and have been lucky in getting a council place.

    I also have a wife who is going to have our 3rd child soon.

    I got a little obssesed about finding info out, and the 2 councils I was looking at getting a council house from have a housing policy available to view online.

    I know that one council says if you have more than 20k lump sump you will not get a house and if we earnt more than 32k a year that means no house (this part was for 3 kids).

    What I am trying to say is go online to your council and find their housing policy and read it. That way you will know the score and can push them harder to house you.

    An example for myself was welfare grounds, medical discharge due to illness meant I could try and up my banding with a "health and well being form". The council did not even mention it to me, but as I had done some research I knew to ask for this form.

    Another top tip for people in the forces living in quarters is to get on that waiting list for a council house. My wife had been on the list for a few years, then we got married and we always updated our council house application every year and I am glad I did. Due to us doing this we had 10 years of waiting time and won the first house we really tried to get (and didn't even send in my well being form).

    I didn't plan to leave, medical discharge could hit anyone, so it makes sense to have a back up housing plan.
