Allotment plot size?

I have only a quarter plot and it is more than enought time wise! I share a half with a friend though so we swap stuff and plant different things. I would estimate that mine is about 9ft wide and maybe 24ft longish but then i have never meassured it and am not very good at visualising space!Cross Stitch Challenge Member ?Number 2013 challenge = to complete rest of millenium sampler.0

Had an idea it was measured originally in rods'
If you remember your school work ,
rods/ perch/ chains/ furlongs ....
My advice , just tackle half the standard ( whatever that is ) one.0 -
A standard plot is ten poles, not that a pole is a standard unit of measurement any more! We have a half plot, which is more than enough for us, and is about 5m wide by 25m long (guestimated by pacing it out). A standard size plot is supposed to be enough space for a family of 4 to grow all the veg they need. Certainly I have found that a half plot is just about big enough for the 2 of us, though hasn't provided us with all we need due to poor planning and poor soil when we took it over. If you work, it will be more than enough, but if you have more time to spend on the plot you may find you want more space after a while.
Enjoy it!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -

After I googled found out that rods and poles are the same
Haven't thought of those since school .... a long time ago .
So a rod/pole is 5.3 metres
4 poles to a chain , and ten chains to a furlong
and we know ?? that a chain is the length between cricket stumps ,which is 22 yds.
So you have all the information you need.:rotfl:0 -
Thank you so much for the replies. Going to have a look at it this afternoon. Dreaming of a beautifully tended, soft fruit laden oasis!! Bet it's a couch grass infested bog! I'll learn to love it.;)Time, Tide and Diarrhoea wait for no man.
