I sell my artwork at craft fairs and as much of it is over £50 I get a large number of cheques. A cardreader may be an option for businesses, it is an expensive alternative for individuals. It is also reliant on electricity or internet connection and as many craft fairs take place in the middle of fields this can be a problem. A merchant account is required for most credit/debit card transactions, PayPal has a system that doesn't but it still costs £240 a year plus a fee for each transaction. I would really miss cheques.
I bet you've never had one of your cheques bounce yet. Many small traders rely on cheques until one bounces, then they never trust them again.

Glider, do you work for a bank by any chance?

If it aint broke, don;t fix it.

Rather takes away from the birthday surprise if you have to give people your bank details so that they can transfer money into your bank account, don't you think?

can't wait for cheques to go to be honest, old fashioned, awkward and take AGES to cash.

i ain't a big fan of branches either to be honest do 90% of my banking over the internet/phone - the remaining 10% is to pay in cash at a branch i may have knocking about, or to withdraw funds from an ATM.

i like the look of this contactless payment technology barclaycard have started using. only for items under £15 at the moment but has potential.
