My daughter now finds her computer is full of cr*p (porno etc) and her ex-boyfriends account/files seem frozen. She hasn't used the puter for a few months.
Is the easiest way to clean everything up by re-formatting the hard drive? Is this easy to do? If so, how do you do it; please?
Her puter uses Windows XP and she has all the original installation discs and the part 2 upgrade on disk. She currently has no internet connection to download any software for cleaning etc. Perhaps I could download and send her a CD; if needed.
We are both not very knowledgeable about 'puters and a friend has suggested she take it to PC World for sorting. I see some derogatory comments on the forum re PC World. What do you think?
She's got rid of him - Please tell us how she can get rid of all his files/cr*p and restore her machine to good clean working order.

First backup any data your daughter may need onto a CD. Format the hard drive and do a clean install of XP. Read this site http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm
You may need a SP2 disk later, which you can pick-up from PC World, or download if you have broad band.0 -
no need for a format
get her to follow steps 1 to 4 of this guide on the forum
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269
and it will remove all the crap he left on there.
if he had his own log on identity for the PC then deleting his user account (under control panel) will remove all his files etc.
a little bit of time will clean it all up
if you get stuck then come back and ask for more advice
you may need to burn some of the software in that articel to disk for her if she cannot connect to the internet or download,Ex forum ambassador

Well don't take it to pc world or any repair shop, because they will check your hard drive and if they find underaged pictures they have every right to inform the Police.
Just delete your daughters boyfriends account under account settings.0 -
which is what I just said ??

I disagree with everything, I think she should delete his account and that would do it"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I don't know what rubbish is there. Perhaps she ought to inform the police herself and report the guy; if it's that really evil underage porno :mad:You don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing" Large print giveth - small print taketh away. "0 -

Even if there was it might not be a good idea to report it, since it's your daughter's computer and hence she's responsible for its content."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Where did the under-age modifier to "porno" come from? Not from the OP!

Quite being a tit, obviously I added my own resource and idea and was reiterating what was posted before.0
