B&Q..customer rights?

Options
I bought a lawnmower from B&Q today and when I paid the staff member said to keep my receipt and that it covered me against problems for 45 days with them, and then after that I would have to contact the manufacturer.
I know the reasonable time requirement for faulty goods is open to interpretation, but can B&Q dictate how long they're willing to accept responsibility for?

B&Q are responsible for the item but after a reasonable time has passed after purchase they will assess the item and repair rather than offer an immediate replacement. This will be done by an expert company, usually the manufacturer or agent. You do under consumer law have the right to return the item to the store and get them to carry out the repair. This of course will involve you returning to the store to deliver and collect the item whereas a simple phone call can often lead to the item being repaired at your home, collected and returned to your door or told to go to the retailer for an exchange. The end result will be the same but often with much less hassle.

I take it was a mountfield or homelite petrol. They say it cos stores aren't allowed to take them back without permission from the manufacturer, Ie the store wont get credited.

As the above poster said after a reasonable period (45days I would class as reasonable). You can still take it back to store, but they'll just contact mountfeild/homelite(same company) for them to arrange and assignment for repair/replacement.

Their repair agents are usually very good but they have unfortunately recently shut a few down.

Thanks. Hopefully shouldn't have any problems but just wondered where I stood.
