Hi,
I am looking to buy a used van.
The one i am looking at is a 53 plate with 56000 on the clock. I will be buying from a used car dealer. There is no VAT to add to the priice.
Is there anything different buying a van rather than a car?
for example : i am told that when buying a used a car from a dealer they must give you a 3 month warranty. does the same thing apply when buying a van?
what is covered by said mandatory warranty?

A lot of vans are covered by warranties yes. Just ask the dealer for a copy of the warranty booklet. Most warranties are aftermarket (at that age of vehicle) and tend to be either bronze, silver or gold types. Ask the dealer which one, any excess?, any VAT registered garage can fix?
Other than that as long as there are no indicators on the van and a copy of the Sun on the dashboard (or as its known the outside lane passport) you should be ok.
Only thing I ever looked for with vans when I was in the trade was history, brakes, gearbox and clutch wear. Strangely the indicators all seemed as if they had never been used...
Good Luck

If you are thinking about buying a second hand van than you could do worse than take a look at www.usedvanexpert.co.uk
If you register with them you get 10 free credits which can be used to read up about individual makes/models of van & find out about their weak spots & what to look out for when viewing & test driving your chosen vehicle.0 -

It would be better if it was a 6 speed as the extra ratio is like an overdrive significantly reducing RPM on the motorway, as in 70 mph @ 2400 RPM. If the van is a car replacement, insurance will be different as the scenario of using a van for sdp and commuting is alien to the insurance co's they will infer some type of commercial use.0 -
i got quotes through confused.com that allowed for social use only - and they were surpisingly competitive.
the van will be a car replacement is so much as it will be used for ferrying our dogs around and towing a caravan. All other motoring - comuting etc - i will be buying a seperate car for.
i was opting for teh 5 speed as the 6 speed is alledged to be constructed from crepe paper and butter. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

Quite a few campsites are reluctant to accept rigs towed by vans for reasons which I suspect I am not allowed to write here.;):o0 -

I see a nice compo claim on 'uman rights/discrimination grounds, when I am turned away from a site I have prebooked online and paid for in a Daily towing a caravan, for being treated like one of the travelling community whose nickname caused a whole thread to be deleted the other week.0 -

I think there have been issues but they should have been sorted by now, a lot depends how the motor has been treated. For towing likely the 5 speed will be just fine.0 -

:rotfl:
You'll be fine as long as the site's website doesn't specifically exclude commercial tow vehicles.;)0
