I've just been quoted £170 for my 3 bed semi by Milfold/British Gas, and that was supposed to be half price!
I decided against it after all I don't think the small saving in fuel is worth the risk.

Price on the website for a detached house £200
    with Milfold/British Gas.

My quote this week was £361.70 not even close :(

Quick query on this topic. Do all new houses have cavity insulation as standard? I have a 2 bed mid terrace (2 years old ish) and I am just curious.

I had a surveyor from Millfold out to look at my new (well new to me) house, and he quoted me £125.00 for a 3 bedroom 1920s semi in Sheffield, it was through the grants scheme with London Electric (?). He showed me all of the schemes that they had offers on, and that was the cheapest.

The cavity insulation they use is Rockwool. Admittedly, I sent back the signed quote about 2 weeks ago, and havent had a date back yet, he did say that they were really really busy, but at least my house will hopefully be toasty for next winter.

He also quoted me for loft insulation, a top up of what we already had would cost me £225, again through the London Elctric scheme, but if we had nothing down it wuld only cost £100. So, we declined on this, who in their right mind, if they were able to would pay an extra £125 for loft insulation which would cost them £100 if they cleared away what was already there. Anyway, we got a 20% off voucher for Homebase in the end, and bought what we needed from there on a 3 for 2 offer, only cost us £40ish, so we are now waiting for othr half and father in law to come and put it down. :D

BTW, I went direct to Millfold rather than through Heat Project/British Gas etc etc.

Yes there will be brick bats in the cavity to conform with Building Regs.

Well i finally heard from the Heat project today.

I got a letter this morning (some 4 weeks after talking to them) stating that a representitive from Miller Pattison will contact me within (another) 4 weeks to carry out a survey.

So i may as well wait to see if their price is any better than the british gas quote.

The wheels turn slow at the heat project :)

In fairness to them they did state that they had recieved thousands of applications over the last few weeks, must be all the visitors here looking for a bargain ;)

In modern properties the cavity is usually insulated by means of expanded polystyrene or fibotherm blocks attached to the blockwork. I can't remember exactly but I think they acheive something like 0.4 U value. Not sure how long they've been around but its a while. Check the building regs for when they came into being. Should be online.

I got home last night to a letter from Millfold stating that they would be coming to my property on 9th March to do my cavity wall insulation.

Given some of the time delays people have been experiencing, I would recommend that anyone in an area where Millfold operate to contact them direct. They came to do the survey after 10 days of contacting them, at the end of January, and I have got the date from them yesterday to do the work in 3 weeks. The letter again confirms the cost as £125.00.

I know this is of no comfort to some people, but I thought I would share my experiences. The contact number I used was 0800 317997.

  • A result - thanks "Blade26" to you I phoned Milford and they are coming out on the 28th Feb to do survey. Hope the survey brings out a quote near to the £125 they expected it to be as Mrs chalky_bertie gets cold in winter.

Got mine done by phoning my local council. Surveyor came out within 2 weeks of the call. Their approved installers came out 2 weeks later and did the job in under 2 hours.

The Council sorted out grants and payment with the installation company and just invoiced me. Cost £117 - that's for a 3 Bed Semi Detached.

Our hall / landing and spare bedroom were particularly cold due to our large gable end wall. I've been keeping a record of the temperature before and after, and it's increased by 5 degrees C since the insulation was done.

    Well worth it!
