I think questions about the BBC's range of output are fair, and a lot of their web output is available elsewhere for free. Maybe their web output should be just news and similar in scope to the world service.

I think BBC3 is a joke - its original programmes are sub ITV and it seems to be 75% full of repeats or imports.

    I don't really see the point of Radio's 1 & 2, 5 either.

I do think that BBC3 has the occasional good show. Seems to be a nursery for shows they hope will make it. BBC4 seems to have a number of interesting documentaries on, getting to watch them is another matter.

Radio 1 & 2 have become too alike.

Fivelive used to be a great station, but has really gone downhill in recent years. Better than talksport though!
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Anyone who has ever had the 'pleasure' of watching the entirely commerically funded TV in the USA would hug the BBC with open arms. It is literally opening credits - 7 minutes of adverts - 4 minutes of show - 7 minutes of adverts - repeated until the end where there are adverts before and after the closing credits! An episode of Friends is on for an hour!
    .

I think you notice it on Bloomberg TV where they disappear every few minutes and play that inane mind numbing music in place of the adverts for us  I also notice it on Sky after 12 pm, been watching a programme and had to go to bed because I forgot what it was about, the adverts were on that long icon7.gif

Fivelive is better than Talksport only in so far as it has no ads. Apart from that it is really rather mediocre.

BBC3 has the odd hit. Being Human, for example, is great. But it has a schedule full of far too much generic pap that (as was said elsewhere) would not be out of place on ITV2 or Sky 1. It also panders to the BBC's obsession with yoof audiences.

BBC2 used to be the place to get hits and was a nursery for new ideas. It also had the advantage of a wider spread. I see little benefit in BBC3 apart from competing with Sky1 and ITV2 which the BBC should not really be doing IMV.

    Radio 2 and Radio 1. Agree 100%.

Talksport is rubbish, then again 5 live has that Green guy  I still think 5 live is far superior.

  • How the hell I could be completely wrong with an opinion is beyond me, as is the belief of boycotting SA sports events ended apartheid.

I never claimed it did it on its own. However it played a part as was acknowledged by Steve Tshwete at the time of the 1992 Cricket world cup in Australia.

I believe your opinion is wrong. Of course anyone can be wrong with an opinionafter all we have plenty of economists with different opinions on how to manage the economy. They cannot all be right, some must be wrong.

In the case of sport and politics, with caveats, I believe your view is wrong. The caveat I would offer would be I do not believe sport and politics mix when you get government interference at a domestic level such as Zimbabwean Cricket.

Why don't you offer a counterpoint instead of insults ?

Alan Green has definitely developed the self important opinion that the nation needs to hear his views rather than whatever he is supposed to be commentating on...

The one show I live on 5live is the Kermode film reviews. I tend to be a Radio 4 man.

For me the problem is the 5live I enjoyed 15 or so years ago does not exist and it has never quite been the same for me. Talksport is something that leaves me cold. Is that numpty Alan Brazil still on it ?

  • I'd rather have adverts than the TV licence... I used to really get annoyed especially with the BBC flying out journalists and program makers to far and wide on our expense. Unfortunately though I can't boycot it because it does provide good programs; Mock the week, Have I got news for you, Doctor Who...

If the world service is so good and appreciated by people all over the planet, why don't they pay for it instead of us?

I remember listening to a commentary of his, with Jimmy Armfield as the summariser. Armfield made the crime of commenting on a little bit of the game and Green was quite dismissive of him and put him down on air.

I wonder how many caps Green has got compared to Armfield ?

After that I thought Green was a knob. Okay Armfield may have overstepped the mark but given his status as a footballing legend he did not deserve to be spoken to like that by a commentator.
