Panacur favourites

I have been recommended Panacur Favourites as a worming treatment for my dogs...Drontal makes one dog very sick!

Has anyone used them please, and are they effective? Apparently they are chewy cubes that the dog will take as a treat-style snack and I'd find this a good way of carrying out the treatment.

  • I have not used these, but have used panacur/granofen granules - they are a white powder, and must be flavourless, as they were eaten hapily mixed into food by a dog who is normally a fussy eater, and sensitive to any changes, so I would imagine the flavoured 'treat' style ones will be accepted fine.

Panacur is a very reputable wormer and been around for a long time. It treats both round worm and tapeworm so he should be fine on it :)

Panacur only treats one kind of tapeworm (Echinococcus), the other (Dipylidium) is the more common - so either use panacur with Droncit injection or try Milbemax.

A note - afaik Panacur have stopped making the Panacur Favourites so any in stock at vets will be going OOS soon. A brand new similar treatment has just been released called Plerion which is also a chewable treat wormer. Different components than Panacur Wormer but not what is in Drontal so should be ok I think.

Thanks everyone for those replies. KVet, can you purchase Plerion without prescription...and is it suitable for roundworms? I did see those with Jack when he was younger, but have never seen anything else.

No, all worming preparations (apart from Dromtal which is POM only from vets and GSL from supermarkets/pharmacys etc) are POM i'm afraid. All veterinary worming preparations in the UK do roundworms as standard, thes rest are all varialbe. Plerion does roundworms, whipworms, tapeworms and hookworms.
  • I dont think plerion in prescription only - and I know panacur/granofen isn't cos I have bought it -

ETA - I see milbemax is mentioned earlier - just a note - I believe some collies and their crosses are sensitive to the drug it contains and should not be given it unless prescribed by your vet, but I think its prescription only anyway.
