Recommendations for first car?

I'm finally booking my intensive course and am looking at cars but have no idea what to get!My fiance isn't much help as he just tells me to get a VW as he loves them!!

I have an awful habit of just looking at cars and thinking 'that looks nice' without taking notice of anything else, including what I want!

So...I want something that looks good lol, obviously not huge, but with good boot space and preferably a bit roomy inside (well decent room between rear and front seats) and with good viewing level (can't remember the term I saw but as in driving level view if that makes any sense at all).

Good on petrol would be nice also.

I obviously have no idea at all:o so recommendations would be greatly appreciated. And yes a new one please :)

Thanks in advance

Ford Ka 1.3 insurance group 2. Cheap as chips to buy and insure for a new driver.

Get quotes before you buy anything.

Agreed... Ford Ka is way to go... Cheap to buy, cheap to insure (not that anything will be particularly cheap for a newly qualified driver!), and cheap to run. Not to mention cheapish to fix if anything goes wrong.

    Cheers :)
  • Did i read your post correctly and you want a brand new car for your first?

You are going to have a terrible shock just how much it will be to insure fully comp on a brand new car.

Whatever you buy you'll want a car in a low insurance group, that brings into the very smallest cars or Land Rover Defender 90..thats true by the way.

All round visibilty, forget new Ford Ka like it's bigger cousin Fiesta it's hopeless for rear vision, and it's actually a Fiat anyway.

If you really want new you could do far worse than a Fiat Panda or Citroen C2 (run out model so bargains about).
If you have sufficient funds Mazda 2, which drives very nicely and good all round vision.

My own suggestion would be an older used car such as a Peugeot 106 (zest3 with power steering etc), cheap to 3rd party insure and one of the nicest little all round vision cars made, you can find them up to 03 plate, the Diesel is a peach.
Get a couple of years no claims and driving experience under your belt and you'll be much better off insurance wise, and if the worst happens and you prang an older car it's not the end of the world, depending on the circumstances you can repair it yourself and not make any claims.

    I was eyeing up a Mazda2 after I posted last night :)

DF is a mechanic aswell which helps (although he rarely works as one now).Shame he won't help me choose a car apart from telling me to get a VW though and that's only because he wants one:rotfl:

DF being a mech makes even more sense to get an older car then , he can keep it running for you very cheaply....in that case get a make of used car that either he worked on or would prefer to (which might point you at a Polo to keep him sweet and onside)...assuming he's game to pick the spanners up again.;)

He loves the new polo but refuses to ever buy a new car himself :-s he prefers used cars (probably because he can't afford new bless him)

It's tempting to keep him sweet :rotfl:

It may sound odd but part of the reason I want a new one is because I'd feel safer in a new one than a second hand one:o

Went through this exercise for a friend here in France, after trying a few she is buying a Hyundai i10. She felt comfortable driving it, very quiet and good guarantee etc.
If you buy new haggle, be prepared to walk away, you can always go back next day.
Go for things like an upgrade, full tank of fuel, set of mats etc all at no extra cost, if he says he can't do it tell him you can get it from another dealer.

depends what you mean by a new car. There are differences with older more established models which have been sold for a few years which come with attractive extras such as updated paint schemes, trim and other goodies inside(and hopefully got the teething problems ironed out) and brand new 1st run which may be recalled when the factory finds out that some part or another has a weak spot that they didnt find in testing (or did find but was too late to delay the model release).

The only way you can really find out what a car is like is to drive it - which sometimes can be awkward, and its only when really having done mileage in that car that you know whether you can get on with it or not.

Few years ago I fancied a Ford Puma - then changed my mind after a test drive as the view out of the side window was so poor I couldnt see safely to pull out of a layby onto a national speed limit road. Mirrors and rear window were no help either as I was joining at an angle
