Do I have to activate my card?

I got my new Capital One card a couple of days ago. I'm not going to use it for purchases, only for the balance transfer I made on application.
The day I received it I called to activate the card. I was on hold for 10 minutes, got bored, so hung up.
It got me thinking...the card is going straight into my safe and won't be used, do I really need to activate it? In fact, I could simply destroy it.

ive had a card before (cant remember which is was) that i didnt ring up about as i didnt need it anymore and they didnt close the account or anything.
this was before i was aware its better to close uneeded accounts0 -
the activation is usually for the pin which you won't need - I don't bother, I just cut up the card & put it in a coin bag ready to send it with the letter to close the account at the end of the freebie period, after I've BT'd onto my next freebie card!0

Rules have tighted up, and if you don't actiave it they may assume it has been 'lost' i.e. stolen in the post and cancel it. However, I would hope they would contact you before they did that to tell you they were going to?0

Doesn't matter if they do as long as you don't try to use it and without the pin you can't.FREE THE WM30
