problem finding driver and installing sound card

I have a sound blaster 16PCI card from creative lab model CT4740.

this sound card came with a disc sound blaster 16pci. when i installed the card in the old pc downloaded the files from the disc it worked perfectly.

i am now installing the card in a different machine. It's a pentium 2 running windows 98se, old but okay for the kids. With the card in place i switched on the pc. It goes through the normal routine of having found a new hardware it is searching for the driver. I inserted the disc and downloaded the files. Unfortunately the pc froze during download. When i restart the pc it detects the new hardware, the sound card, and says it is downloading the software and then freezes.

If i remove the sound card the pc starts and runs perfectly. I had uninstalled and reinstalled the programs from the disc. So far so good. The problem is if i start the pc with the sound card in place it detects the new hardware and freezes. It will run ok without it.

Any ideas?

try downloading and installing Drivercleaner and following the intructions in the read me (run in safe mode is the main one) to delete the drivers.

failing that, a repair install on your windows installation would probably do the job.

Is the driver compatible with 98se?
If not you might find one that is on driverguide.com.
I always look there when we have hardware but no driver disc.
You have to join but it is free and you dont get emails from them or anything.

i just searched on there and it has 2 pages full of drivers for the CT4740 of which about 10 should work with win 98Se

Windows update usually have sound drivers whql for creative, the ones they supplied me are better than creatives.
