ALWAYS Check EVERY bill ! - It pays !

It's always worth checking EVERY bill whether it arrives via email, through the post or from the shop or supermarket checkout - if time is short even a quick 5 second glance is better than not checking at all.

As a regular shopper both with the wife and solo, I try to memorise special offer and discounted or reduced prices as I put goods into the trolley and it's surprising how often these end up different on the till receipt in the wide variety of retailers where we shop. Human error or maybe deliberate....who knows? The tills only charge what they have been programmed to charge. My son always says that we have too much time on our hands....lol.

My latest "catch" was a nice prepacked piece of venison with a price of £5.99p printed on the label. Unfortunately I didn't check the till receipt in the car park and was back home 30 miles from the shop when I noticed that I had been charged £7.49p ! We had called into Stans Superstore in St Martins near Oswestry as we have done many times, en route back from a day trip to Wales, so when I phoned them they apologised profusely and offered a refund on my next visit. I decided that might be many months, so posted said receipt and pack label to the store with a covering letter. We then cooked and ate the venison haunch which was superb.

To the great credit of Stans Superstore, I have now received a cheque for £6.50p from the store manager together with a letter of regret and thanking me for pointing out the error. Thanks for that. Happy ending.

So, the moral of the story is..... keep stores and utility suppliers on their toes. CHECK THAT BILL !!

You are absolutely right, Ignore the previous one(DCFC79) comment, he would always discourage people, thanks for your remainder and advise. It is 100% true, we are not checking at all. I had a similar problem since then i'm really careful. I will reply him.

Not exactly sure how what DCFC79 actually put was discouraging, he was merely pointing out that it is common sense to check bills and that this type of thread has been done many a time on this Money Saving website. However it is always good for a reminder!

I never used to be bothered to check until one day I was clearing my bag out and found a receipt that showed I'd been charged for 2 packs of toilet roll when I'd only bought one. £4.59 extra! Nearly a week had gone by before I noticed this and to their credit the Co-op refunded my money, but also said they wouldn't do it if it happened again (i.e. nearly a week after). Now I always check the receipt.

I think he was basically pointing out that he doesn't like discouraging the blatant obvious!

thanks for your remainder and advise. .

You need reminding to check your receipt??

So you check one day then the next day the whole "check the recipt" mecahnism falls out of your head???

Remember to take some cash or alternative means of payment when you go shopping.... Top Tip.

Couple of weeks ago I was charged £32 for a packet of watercress which costed a couple of quid. I had done a big shop so could have easily missed it had I not checked the receipt. On the same receipt they also charged me twice for a bunch of grapes!!

    Culprit: Sainsburys!!

I stopped to check the receipt because I suspected something was wrong, however, with two kids with me, I dont normally have time to scrutinise it immediately.

Sorry "mate" I didn't realise these were your forums. If you were more tolerant of others maybe you would increase your employment prospects.

Not everyone is as perfect as you, nor has as much time to double check each bill and receipt in detail without fail.

Handy tip: Don't read the receipt whilst pushing your trolley out the store. You WILL hit a pillar *nurses sore head* :D
