Hey,
MEN arena is just walking distance from the City; it's close so don't worry.
As for accommodation why don't you try looking on laterooms.com and look for something in Manchester city centre? There is a travelodge nearby but I would think it may be booked up by now... no harm in trying, and I am sure there are plenty of other places to stay?
Good luck. Hindsight is a wonderful thing...

Hi, there is a Premier Inn at Heaton park which is a few miles outside the city centre. The hotel is close to the metro tram line BOWKER VALE (5 min walk away) the metro runs directly into Manchester get off at the Victoria for the MEN entrance which is actually within the station itself. The trams run till about 1am or so at weekends. GMPTE have a travel website with all the times, fares and details. Not in the poshest area of Manchester but it may be cheaper or availability may be better. Sorry just edited this, forgot to tellyou, the tram takes about 20 mins to get into the city centre and they run every 12 mins.

When we went to see Take That there a couple of years ago we stayed at the Manchester SportCity travelodge, it's a bit further out but there is a bus that runs from opposite the hotel into the city centre (MEN is a short walk), day ticket was about £2.50 I think and it's valid untill late at night (e.g. early hours of the morning). We got the night bus back afterwards that runs every hour or so, stops at the same place opposite the hotel.
We've used it twice, once for after the concert and one other time when we went out in the town, the night buses run till late I'm sure we got it at 3/4am.

Premier Inn Printworks - not too far, looks like an old sky scraper (not stayed)
Travelodge Manchester City Centre - near the Premier Inn, not too bad (had meeting here)
Lowry - across the road from the Travelodge, away from main road, luxury hotel (work opposite)
Park Inn Manchester Victoria - directly opposite the MEN (stayed)
Crowne Plaza Manchester City Centre - very nice hotel in Shudehill, 10 minute walk max. (Stayed here)
Others to consider but not as close as the above
Ramada Plaza Manchester Piccadilly (meetings)
Princess on Portland (dont hurry to book here) (stayed)
Thistle
Macdonald (stayed)
Radisson Edwardian (my favourite) (stayed)
Midland (stayed)0
