we bought my son a hard drive last summer (his birthday was october but the price was very good) He installed it into his pc in october and it has just died.We couldnt find the receipt anywhere but OH said 'its okay because the shop took our address at time of purchase for warranty purposes.'
We took it back and they said,'its not within 30 days so you will have to sort it out for yourself.Go to the manufacturers website.' We did and they said ,' its not within 30 days so you must go to the retailer.'
OH had an arguement with the retailer and finally got them to take the drive to send off but they asked us to contact the manufacturer to get info on returning the drive ourselves which we couldnt do because they were only giving return info to the retailer and not private individuals.
We have finally got the retailer to say they will sort it out, so hopefully we will get a new drive???
Anyway, If you are buying a harddrive etc with a stores own box,its likely the store are reponsible for the warranty.Dont get fobbed off!

What make of hard drive is it.
In law the onus is on the retailer however often retailers point you to the manufacters.
Usually with Hard drives you get two years warranty.
Over the years I have bought many hard drives and have sent two back. On both occasions it was with a manufacter called Maxtor. Who replaced it with once I gave them the fault and or checked with an on-line utility to test the drive.
I am sure most manufacters do this, so it may well be easy to go down this route, and cost very little.
I got two new drives from Maxtor in less than a week, hence I normally buy Maxtors.

They are western digital but are sold in optima boxes.
Western digital refer us to the retailer as they are not Western digital boxes and the retailer seems to have absolutely no returns policy set up.
We have managed to get the retailer to take the drive and they say they will sort it out but I dont hold out much hope as they didnt have any idea who to return it to and asked us to find out.
Western digital say it is really up to the retailer although they are happy to do it without if the retailer turns out to be inept.
Shan't buy anything else from that retailer though as they cause problems if you need to return an item.
Shame because that retailer has excellent prices but I suppose they are paid peanuts to keep costs down,so they employ monkeys.0 -
Result!!
Because we didnt just shut up and go away, my son now has his replacement hard drive.
We emailed the head office of the retailer who said ofcourse they will get a replacement and the salesman in the shop must have got muddled up!!
