My Hi-Fi Cd player (Technics SL-PG590) is skipping.
Haven't really used it that much.

Sometimes it plays Cds reasonably ok, other times it's skipping a lot.

It's part of a Hi-Fi separates system, it all looks similiar & goes together, so I'd like to get it working properly. Not worth spending lot of money trying to repair, but it could be something simple.

Have tried using a Cd lens cleaner, that hasn't solved problem. Next step will be to open unit & clean laser lens, but somehow I don't think that willl work.

Someone has also suggested you can adjust the laser with an adjustment screw under the laser.

Anyone know about this ??

Is it on a sturdy enough surface? If it's vibrating at all that could be causing skips. May as well rule out the simple things before getting too drastic

Yes, the hi-fi is all stacked together firmly on firm base, nothing is moving.

I think they were probably winding you up. I've replaced laser mechanisms on several CD players, and none has had any form of manual adjustment.

There are generally only a few reasons why CD drives start skipping.

The first is that the plastic filaments from which the lens is supported degrade and no longer hold the lens in such a way that it can focus properly. This cannot be fixed, and attempts to clean the laser lens can often cause the problem or make it worse.

The second is an accumulation and drying out of grease on the rod that the laser head slides along. It often causes skipping at the start and end of a CD rather than in the middle. It can be fixed by applying a light silicon oil in the right place, but don't squirt it all over or it will get on the lens and make matters worse.
