Son selling car but insurance now run out

Son has decided to sell his car which is taxed and mot'd to fund uni costs. He has let the insurance expire as he was intending to sell, but can a person looking to buy now take it out for a test drive if they are fully comp but he as the registered owner is no longer insured?

i had exactly the same problem few months ago as i did not want to renew the insurance...unfortunately a private buyer cant test drive an uninsured car even if he has fully com. insurance. I ended selling to a motor trader who told me that his trade insurance will cover him .

This isn't quite correct - it comes down to the individual policies. Some policies state that the holder can drive other cars on a third-party basis, whilst others specify that the other car must itself be insured.

So they only way to check is to ask any potential buyers to bring their insurance documents with them, and check them out on the spot. :)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Badexample is right, you need to check.

Some policies don't provide the DOC cover at all, some link it to age, some insist that the other car has it's own policy.

Looking at my household, three policies with three different companies and all provide it and none require the other car to have it's own policy

My previous policy with the Co-op, didn't require a car to be insured for me to drive it 3rd party, however I think my current policy (Zurich Connect) does. Remember when driving an uninsured vehicle to have your insurance docs in case you get pulled over by the old bill and that you can't leave it unattended on a public highway.

Your son could arrange short term insurance e.g. for a day or a number of days.

I would suggest he is very careful who he lets test drive, whether they are insured or not.
