How do I reclaim Mileage?

I have been givena car allowance and now i must only claim 12p from employer not 40p.

Do I send a statement of milage each quarter to IR? I dont file a tax return so not sure what to do.

You need to complete form p87 and submit to HMRC together with your mileage records.

True, but you don't need to send the mileage record, a completed P87 is enough.

I think you will find if you send in just a P87 then you will be asked for your mileage records. Thus delaying your claim.

Actually the P87 is enough and you shouldn't have to supply supplimentary information.

HMRC only only generally ask for further information if there is something unusual about your claim being either:

    1. You don't recieve any reimbursement from your employer (so they think it's home to work commuting).
    2. The mileage expense is inconsistent with your job title.
    3. Most common, the amount is a round sum eg. 7,000 miles so they think (probably correctly) that you don't actually have a mileage record and have estimated the amount.

at the end of tax year 2010.................

Although seriously it will most likely take a couple of weeks for it to be updated on the website.

So many forms will need to be added to the website its done on a rolling basis, and reading the forums last year, it took about 10 days for personal taxation forms to be added.

You can't claim until the tax year is complete however if you sent it in now it probably would be processed anyway.

You don't need the 09/10 form just print out the 08/09 one and change the year end at the top. Also include a covering letter explaining what it is and requesting a cheque for your refund (otherwise they will probably try a tax code adjustment).

I can't offer any further coroboration here but I'm sure another poster can. I can explain why this is the case though.

A P87 claim will be after the the end of the tax year and you are claiming back tax you have already overpaid, so you are entitled to a cheque for the amount rather than a tax code adjustment.

It's HMRC's preference to amend your tax code rather than send a cheque, I think mainly because it's cheaper and easier to do this. Theoretically this will result in you getting the tax back over the course of the year, however changes in your employment circumastances may mean that you actually don't get the right amount. Furthermore a cheque for the whole amount now is better than drip fed over the next 12 months so getting a cheque is to your advantage.

The P87 form has no way of indicating how you want your refund paid so if you don't tell your tax office they will generally opt for a tax code adjustment by default (because that's what they prefer). Including a covering letter is just a way of telling them what your preference is, which they should comply with.

In the case of the example here I would suggest that the OP should send a covering letter not only to to get a cheque but also to eliminate any confusion against which tax year they are claiming the expenses against due to the fact that the 2009/10 P87 has not actually been published yet.

Hi. This will be my first year of claiming, so am grateful for all the advice. Just one question though - generally how long does it take to receive payment? Are we talking weeks or months?!
